New life for old guys.
Serious environmental concerns on the global scale nowadays are connected with the over-ageing of commercial and military naval fleets. In the nextcoming future, an increasing number of ships and vessels will reach operational obsolescence, no longer fulfilling the minimal standards of security for cruising and freight transportation. After going out of service - when not doomed to be abandoned along the piers of abandoned harbours - naval fleets should undergo very long and extremely expensive processes of dismantling.
A_MOORE is a project based on the idea that disused ships and vessels could represent instead a very valuable resource for the urban planning of waterfronts and harbour cities. The reconversion of naval fleets and their permanent settlement along the coastline would give the possibility of creating new infrastructural hubs, new urban polarities, new setting for urban functions. Ships under obsolescence would be deprived of fuel tanks, engines and most of the mechanical systems (weapons too, in case of military vessels), put in security state, moored in along the coastline in proximity of urban centres. Here they would host leisure time activities, residential dwellings, offices, hotels, various kinds of urban services, including parking spaces. All ships would be accessed by piers or platforms and connected with aerial footpaths, in order to give shape to a new urban network of high spatial complexity. Reversedly, the ground would be free from any insediative or infrastructural need: open space for public recreation, gardens, parks, beaches, sport facilities.
A_MOORE is a project for the extension of the city of Tallinn under these premises. It proposes the creation of a very intense urban polarity floating on the water of the Baltic Sea, in close proximity of the Linnahall site and the passenger terminal of the harbour. The new city administration offices and other urban functions could be located on board of the floating neighbourhood and connected with the historical city with a network of soft mobility systems and motorable roads.
A_MOORE is a project about: growth: the floating settlement would give new meaning to the waterfront area of the city of Tallinn and would provide the possibility of unlimited extension without further use of land. No footprints on the ground. flexibility: the floating city may be physically rearranged by changing the location of the different units according to new needs, or new requirements, or new urban urgencies that may occur in the future. An adaptable layout; opportunity: because of its geographical location, the city of Tallinn could easily find resources for this project within the great number of aged and disused vessels which belonged to former Soviet Navy. New life for old guys; sustainability. the recover and reconversion for urban purposes of vessels of all kinds (ferries, freightships, battleships, etc.) is a positive strategy from the environmental point of view, as it is based on recycling and re-use.
